Kody's Moleskine iPod Hack |
My name is Kody Chamberlain, and I'm a professional comic book artist and graphic designer. I'm also a very loyal Moleskine and iPod user. When I head for the door at the end of the day, I always grab my iPod and my Moleskine. So I decided to figure out a way to combine the two into a single handy case.
With that in mind, I developed 'Kody's Moleskine iPod Hack'. If you're a fan of the Moleskine and the iPod, this hack is worth the effort. |

| First, start with a leather refillable sketchbook or journal cover. I bought mine a few years ago at an arts festival, but I've since found some online here. I haven't purchased any of these, but they look to be very similar to mine, and the size listed is the same. |
| Take the strap from your Moleskine and strap everything together except for the front cover, leave that loose. |
Slide the sketchbook cover under the leather flap. |
| Fold it over, and repeat the process on the opposite side with a second moleskine of your choice. Now for the iPod. I've got the 60 gig video iPod, it's thinner than the older model, which makes for a better fit. |
| You'll need a case with a belt clip. I've got the DLO PodFolo case, it's a perfect fit. I've also got a little ear bud sleeve that came with my old iPod. The sleeve attaches nicely on the top of the iPod case. This might be a little tougher to find. Mine came with an old iPod case I bought from XTreme Mac, but last time I checked, they didn't offer these anymore. If you can't find one, you may have to work out some other way to include the ear buds. |
| I also keep a small plastic bag with a kneaded eraser, extra pencil led, an eraser refil, an ink cartridge for my brush-pen, etc. |
| It tucks nicely opposite the iPod and fills in that extra space. |
| Next, I cut some plastic sheets to hold my pens. The pens with clips latch on to the plastic directly, the fatter markers without clips are held on with little rubber bands. I've cut little notches in the plastic to hold the rubberbands in place. I actually use ponytail holders since they're a little stronger and the black looks nice with the set. |
| I change the pens around very often. Sometimes I grab a variety of markers, other times, I bring several inking tools. Mostly, I keep a nice variety. |
| The plastic pen holders slide perfectly behind the sketchbooks and lock into place. |
| As you can see, everything is held into place by the leather flaps. It's also a very efficient use of space, no space is wasted and everything I need is in the leather case. |
| When it's latched, it's nice and secure. |
| And your iPod connector is facing out, so you can easily recharge and update without removing it from the case! |
And that's it! Hope you dig it. Feel free to share the link with anyone that might be interested. |
